I guess that in that particular way they ...Hey JF!<br /><br />I guess that in that particular way they are formulaic, but the gist of the comment was that they were so in a manner that made the resulting output predictable or 'samey'. Or so was the person's impression of them, and they admitted as much. <br /><br />Needless to say, I don't really agree with that position, having seen the play results. At the same time, I can respect the preference of not wanting to rigidly follow a structure. <br /><br />Still, I think that even in those cases, guides like the 9Q's can still be very useful, thus my suggestion, by way of Vogler really, to use it as a map when a solo session starts to feel boring, meandering, or stuck somewhere. Please send my regards! I miss it over there... (I can't go back because of an issue with someone on there - NOT Tom.)<br /><br />As for the comment that the 9Qs is formulaic...well, it is! I wanted it to be that way to feel like a TV show or film as opposed to a novel or real life. Despite the formula, so much can happen within its structure that I don't have a problem with the familiar plot rhythms, much in the same way I haven't stopped watching tv or going to the movies.
